Falls cause many serious injuries every year in Kentucky. While they are often more common in older adults who have trouble with stability and balance, they can happen to anyone. All it takes it one second for you to fall and end up with a serious medical situation. Falls can lead to many injuries due to the impact of your body on the ground.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explain one the most common injury is a hip fracture. Of all hip fractures that are treated, 95 percent of them are due to falls. Other broken bones are also common. Most often it is the bones in the arm and wrist that get broken, but broken ankles are common, too. Head injuries are also something to watch for. Falls are actually the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.

Falls are very dangerous. One out of every five falls results in a serious injury that requires medical care and even surgery. Every year, hospitals across the country see about 800,000 patients who are suffering from injuries due to a fall. The number of deaths related to falls has been steadily increasing since 2007. The CDC predicts that by 2030, there will be seven people who die every hour due to a fall.

Falls are often caused by issues with balance, weakness, pain, vision problems and using medications that can affect alertness. They often happen due to uneven ground, broken steps or loose rugs or carpet. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
